Ciao Roman de Giuli, prima di tutto grazie per aver partecipato a questa intervista.
Roman de Giuli è un famoso fotografo tedesco amante della fotografia astratta, e sta stupendo l’Europa con i suoi capolavori, ma ne parleremo nel corso dell’intervista.
Ciao Roman, parlaci un po’ di te! Com’è nata questa passione e da quanto la pratichi?
Ciao, ho 38 anni e lavoro come docente per i media audiovisivi presso l’Università di Norimberga-Erlangen. La mia passione principale è la fotografia sperimentale e la cinematografia. Attualmente sto sperimentando con un sacco di diverse sostanze, liquidi e polveri per mostrare i loro straordinari comportamenti, i movimenti e la bellezza. Per me, i modelli organici sono di grande fascino perché mostrano un potenziale narrativo astratto che può essere portato in un contesto più grande per raccontare una storia o per creare un’atmosfera speciale. E mi piace la combinazione di un approccio tecnico e creativo quando si fa arti visive.
Sei un amante della macro fotografia, che obiettivi usi? Come ti è venuta questa idea?
Io sono un grande fan della fotografia macro, ma non su oggetti tipici come i fiori o insetti (anche se questo è un grande argomento, ovviamente). Sono piuttosto interessato a superfici, strutture e modelli organici e le loro proprietà. Faccio film 4K con un Panasonic GH4 e io uso i vecchi Obiettivi macro Canon FD, il 50mm e 100mm. Entrambe le lenti sono taglienti e offrono una qualità d’immagine decente quando punto verso il basso. Ma per il mio prossimo progetto lavorerò probabilmente con una Canon EF 100 mm Macro L f2.8 in combinazione con un obiettivo Aputure Regain. Questa combinazione di hardware mi permette un miglior controllo sulla messa a fuoco.
Ottengo le mie idee da altre arti visive, libri e la natura, naturalmente. Anche con la sperimentazione di sostanze, luci, lastre di vetro e un sacco di diversi strumenti. Quando trovo qualcosa di interessante, provo ad avvicinarmi da un drammatico o diciamo punto di vista cinematografico. Mi metto alla ricerca di suoni e musica e quindi modificare una prima sequenza. Dopo un po ‘ho una specie di storia e iniziare a registrare i colpi di cui ho bisogno per completare il mio montaggio.
Le tue riprese sembrano lavorazioni grafiche digitali fatte al computer, veramente complimenti, il tuo lavoro “Singularity” ha ricevuto molte attenzioni e premi, come riesci ad avere ogni volta l’ispirazione per nuovi lavori?
Grazie mille! Hai ragione, un sacco di gente pensa che il mio lavoro è solo un computer animation 3D, ma non è questo il caso. Si tratta di contenuti 2D, le foto e i video sono girati in modo che essi appaiono molto tridimensionali e vivaci. Questo comporta un sacco di pazienza e di esperienza.
L’ispirazione è infatti infinita, c’è così tanto da scoprire di fronte a un obiettivo macro che sarò sempre trovare qualcosa di nuovo.
In Italia purtroppo la fotografia non è vista come un vero e proprio lavoro, ma più come un passatempo (se non ad alti livelli), li in Germania com’è percepita? E’ valorizzato il lavoro del fotografo?
Fotografi e registi in Germania possono avere un professione, ma solo alcuni di essi possono riuscire a vivere con questo mestiere. Si tratta di un mercato altamente competitivo. Ma, come artista visivo si può avere una buona reputazione, il che non significa che si può fare un sacco di soldi, ma che le persone ti rispettano per quello che fai.
Cosa vorresti trasmettere alle persone con i tuoi video?
Voglio che la gente si diverta e spero che vengano toccati di volta in volta dalla bellezza e fragilità della natura e dei modelli. Quello che mi propongo ogni volta è quello di creare immagini che non sono mai stati visti prima.

Hello Roman, first of all thank you for participating in this interview.
Roman de Giuli is a famous German photographer, is amazing and Europe with its masterpieces, but we’ll discuss in the interview.
1) Hello Roman, tell us a little ‘you! How did this passion and how to practice it?
Hi, I’m 38 years old and I work as a lecturer for audiovisual media at the University Nuremberg-Erlangen. My main passion is experimental photography and cinematography. Usually I’m experimenting with a lot of different substances, liquids and powders to show their extraordinary behavior, movements and beauty. To me, organic patterns are highly fascinating because they show an abstract narrative potential which can be brought in a bigger context to tell a story or to create a special atmosphere. And I like the combination of a technical and creative approach when doing visual arts.
2) Are you a lover of macro photography, which uses lenses? How did you get this idea?
I am a big fan of everything macro, but I do not shot typical objects like flowers or insects (although this is a great topic of course). I am rather interested in surfaces, structures as well as organic patterns and their properties. I do film in 4K with a Panasonic GH4 and I use old Canon FD Macro Lenses, the 50mm and the 100mm. Both lenses are sharp and offer a decent image quality when stopped down. But for my next project I will probably work with a Canon EF 100mm Macro L f2.8 in combination with an Aputure Lens Regain. This combination of hardware allows me better control when pulling focus.
I get my ideas from other visual arts, books and nature of course. Also by experimenting with substances, lights, glass plates and a lot of different tools. When I find something interesting, I try to get closer from a dramatic or let’s say cinematic point of view. I start searching for sounds and music and then edit a first sequence. After a while I have kind of a ruff story and start recording the shots I need to complete my montage.
3) Your shots seem to digital printing operations done on the computer, really compliments your work “Singularity” has received a lot of attention and awards, how do you manage to have every time the inspiration for new jobs?
Thank you very much.You are right, a lot of people think my work is just a 3D computer animation, but this is not the case. It is 2D content, pictures and videos which are shot in a way that they appear very three dimensional and vivid. This take a lot of patience and experience.
The inspiration is in fact endless, there is so much to discover in front of a macro lens that I’ll always find something new.
4) In Italy unfortunately the picture is not seen as a real job, but more as a pastime (if not at high levels), it in Germany as it is perceived? And ‘he appreciated the work of the photographer?
Photographers and Filmmakers in Germany may have a professional business, but only some of them can make a living from it. It is a highly competitive market. But as visual artist you can have quite a good reputation, which does not mean that you can make a lot of money, but people respect you for what you do.
5) What would you like to convey to people with your videos?
I want the people to be entertained and I hope that they get touched from time to time by the beauty and frailty of nature and it’s patterns. What I aim at is to create pictures which were never seen before.
